Effective portraits can be achieved with careful use of available light but adding extra light to the mix can dramatically expand the creative possibilities.
In this session we wander with a model and some lighting equipment for a few hours and practice portrait lighting techniques. Shooting outdoors allows us to utilise a variety of different backdrops.
This session is limited to 4 photographers.
As the model is paid, photographers are under no set obligation to return photos. Photographers are welcome to use the photos shot for personal portfolio use only.
Photographers are expected to already know the basics of how to use their camera to achieve correct exposure. A working understanding of film speed, shutter speed and aperture is useful. Photographers who have attended some or all of my previous Flash Lighting sessions will probably find this session easier to manage than those who are not yet comfortable with basic flash techniques.
The only equipment required is a camera and lens. The camera should have a standard flash hotshoe for mounting an external flash. Your lens should reach at least 70mm. I normally suggest using a general purpose zoom lens (eg. 24-70mm) to achieve different perspectives but if all you have is a “nifty fifty” 50mm f1/.8 on a cropped sensor (APS-C) camera, that’s fine.
All lighting equipment and modifiers is supplied for photographers to use. Photographers can bring some of their own gear but should contact me beforehand to discuss how that might work.
As this session is conducted outdoors, please dress comfortably and if rain is forecast, bring an umbrella.
This walk is usually scheduled to start around 2pm near Southern Cross Station and runs for 3 hours. The fee for each participant is usually $80.
